Established in 2015, the Drug Lawsuit Source College Fund Scholarship offers $1,000 to one student each year who best exemplifies determination and perseverance to succeed in their academic endeavors.

This year’s scholarship recipient certainly possesses those qualities.

Cierra Begay is a freshman at Arizona State University studying Justice Studies to pursue a field in Criminal Justice.

Begay explains in her essay the reason behind studying criminal justice is due to the court system not fully providing rightful justice for innocent people, specifically those of her tribe. Begay is a tribal member of the White Mountain Apache Tribe located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) project also motivated her to want to fight for people whose rights have been constantly stripped away from them and to protect sacred land.

“My goal is to get a degree in Justice Studies to help stabilize the court system and bring justice to my tribal members,” Begay said. “This mistreatment has to stop and one day, I will be one of many to put a complete end to this modern-day assimilation.”

Begay said she plans on receiving her undergraduate degree in justice studies and intends on applying to the university’s graduate program to acquire her master’s degree. She also has expressed interest in applying to law school to continue her journey into criminology.

“It is an honor to be selected and have the opportunity to pursue my goals to help others whose voices are often times not heard,” Begay said.

Each year, the Drug Lawsuit Source College Fund Scholarship is available to one student who best displays determination and perseverance, much like Begay, in their academic endeavors. The student must be enrolled in an accredited college, university, junior college; a high school senior enrolled in summer or fall classes; or attend a trade school in the United States.

The deadline to apply for the 2018 Drug Lawsuit Source College Fund Scholarship was Nov. 1, 2018. Details for the 2019 scholarship will be posted in the near future on www.druglawsuitsource.com.
