CHICAGO, Ill. — AbbVie has undergone two trials over its testosterone drug, Androgel, both of which ended in the company paying millions of dollars to plaintiffs.

The AbbVie losses came just months before another testosterone drug manufacturer, Eli Lilly, decided to settle the hundreds of lawsuits brought against its drug, Axiron.

In June 2014, testosterone drug lawsuits were consolidated into multidistrict litigation and moved to the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago. Androgel was one of the first drugs to be tried during the bellwether trial phase, which is the stage in which a few representative cases are chosen to go to trial first.

The first Androgel bellwether trail was resolved in July 2017, and ended in a $150 million jury verdict against AbbVie. However, the verdict only included punitive damages and lacked compensatory damages, so a judge subsequently overturned it and ordered a new trial.

In October 2017, another Androgel trial ended in a $140 million verdict in favor of a man who suffered a heart attack after using Androgel.

In both cases, the juries ruled that AbbVie had downplayed Androgel’s serious risks in the marketing of the drug.

Just a few months after these Androgel trials ended, Eli Lilly announced in December 2017 that it had reached a global settlement agreement in the over 400 lawsuits it faced over its TRT drug, Axiron.

By agreeing to settle, Eli Lilly was able to avoid the two bellwether trials originally scheduled for early this year.

The details of the settlement have not been released, but if the Androgel verdicts are any indication, compensation in testosterone lawsuits is expected to be significant.

What is Androgel?

Androgel is a testosterone replacement therapy drug manufactured by AbbVie, Inc. that is used to treat men with a deficiency of the hormone.

This condition, known as hypogonadism, can cause lower strength, reduced energy, and diminished sex drive.

Androgel is a topical gel that is applied directly to the skin. The testosterone in the gel is then absorbed slowly into the body.

Various TRT medications have been approved by the FDA for treatment of men who lack the appropriate testosterone levels. However, these drugs, including Androgel, have been linked to serious side effects that can cause lasting injuries and even death.

What are Serious Complications of Androgel?

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that testosterone treatment was associated with a significant increase in coronary artery plaque, a waxy substance that can build up and reduce the flow of oxygen to the heart.

As such, many people have faced serious cardiovascular risks after taking TRT drugs, including:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Blood clots
  • Death
