SILVER SPRING, Md. — Once again, medical implant giant Zimmer has been hit with a recall. This recall is in relation to one of its many hip replacement systems.
In the latest blow to the Zimmer brand, the company’s M/L Taper with Kinectiv Technology Femoral Stems and Necks are the subject of an FDA class I recall. The recall applies to parts that were manufactured and distributed between March 31, 2015 and April 20, 2015. These particular implants parts use the company’s Tivanium alloy and help doctors tailor fit an implant to a patient’s bone.
The reason for the recall is it was found that manufacturing residues were left on these devices. These chemical residues can cause significant health issues including allergic reactions, pain, infection, and even death. If a patient has a hip implant with parts that fall under the recall’s domain, they may need revision surgery to replace the recalled parts.
An FDA recall may not always raise eyebrows, but a class I recall is the most serious one in the company’s repertoire. It is only used in cases where it is believed the product can cause a serious adverse health reaction or death.
Not only is this particular line of hip implants subject to the recall, but they fall under the category of much maligned, yet still popular, metal-on-metal hip implants. Metal-on-metal hip replacement implants mean all of the various component parts of the implant have a metal coating (often titanium). Zimmer is a top maker of such hip parts despite thousands of lawsuits and multiple recalls. Metal-on-metal implants are marketed as being more long-lasting and ideal for younger patients. However, there have been numerous serious health complications and risks associated with the device.
