TUCSON, Ariz. — As part of a nationwide settlement between Johnson & Johnson and the federal government, Arizona and 36 states will receive financial reparations for damages incurred due to illegal handling of Risperdal.
Tucson News reported that the state of Arizona will receive nearly $6.1 million of the $181 million agreed upon by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
The settlement comes as allegations of improper Risperdal marketing in the form of “off-label” promotion were brought against Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The illegal actions allegedly occurred between 1998 and 2004.
However, Johnson & Johnson remains steadfast that the settlement is not an indication of guilt. The settlement will prevent Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals from engaging in illegal promotion that is constituted by promoting Risperdal for any use that has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
