Benton, Ill. — A class-action lawsuit was recently filed against AstraZeneca, claiming the company failed to warn users of its drug Nexium of severe side effects, according to a report published by the Madison Record.
The plaintiff filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois on May 3.
The lawsuit named AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals as responsible for common law fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation, product liability, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The complaint alleges Nexium’s drug class, proton pump inhibitors, has links to kidney failure, pneumonia, infections and hip fractures. The plaintiff alleges his use of Nexium led to the development of kidney failure leading to the subsequent kidney transplant.
AstraZeneca allegedly knew of the possible side effect, but failed to warn consumers of its severity or prominence on drug labels.
