SAN FRANCISCO — Despite the increasing popularity of the device, another victim of the Mirena IUD is pursuing a lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals for its dangerous product.
The 26-year-old California native filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California. She is one of many women who believe the Mirena IUD is the cause for her serious medical complications. The young woman had the device inserted in May of 2012. She then experienced a variety of disconcerting symptoms, including pelvic pain, chills, fever, and pain that was so bad she needed to return to the hospital. The victim attempted to have the device removed a year later but the hysteroscopy failed the first time. She was forced to endure surgery to remove the IUD in June of 2013. In addition, the victim suffered permanent bodily injury after the device’s removal and continuing treatment/medical monitoring.
Problems with the Mirena IUD
The Mirena intrauterine device is a very popular form of long-term birth control manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Bayer. The device is being marketed to young women, low-income women, and those with hectic schedules, as an effective, cheap, and easy means of birth control. Mirena is one of a very limited number of IUDs cleared for sale in the United States. The latest studies show that IUD use has increased 83 percent since 2006.
The device is a small t-shaped piece of plastic. It slowly releases hormones into the body over a five-year period. The device, however, has been found to cause some significant health complications. Specifically, the IUD is believed to spontaneously migrate out of place after insertion. This means the device leaves the uterus and floats around the cavity. When the device migrates or is expelled from the body, it can cause numerous side effects including pain, fever, cramps, and scarring. Most seriously, it can result in organ or uterus perforation. The IUD is also believed to cause horrible pregnancy complications, such as ectopic pregnancy, and other pelvic conditions, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. The only treatment is to remove the device via surgery, but this does not always relieve the victim of the many side effects.
Bayer has rejected all claims that the Mirena IUD is being falsely marketed, is defective, or is a health risk to women.
