DENVER — As part of a 2012 agreement between the U.S. Justice Department and GlaxoSmithKline to settle charges of illegal promotion and drug pricing, the pharmaceutical giant will pay a total of $3 billion to different entities, according to the Denver Post.
The payment will be the largest in U.S. history by a drug company. Of the $3 billion, the state of Colorado will receive $4.5 million to compensate for damage done to patients and systems within the state.
Federal allegations regarded some of the company’s most notable drugs including Paxil, Advair, and Zofran. GSK marketed the drugs for non-approved uses while making false claims about the safety and effectiveness of the drugs.
To promote the prescription of their drugs, GSK allegedly paid for prescribing doctors’ vacations, speaking tours, and other extravagances including ski trips, hockey tickets, and speaking fees.
Of the $3 billion, $2 billion will be used to compensate for losses suffered by groups that include Medicare, Veterans’ Affairs, Tricare and Medicaid.
