Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2005 to combat chronic iron overload, Exjade (deferasirox) is a unique drug, holding an oral iron chelator classification.
However, it is widely regarded as an extremely dangerous drug, as can be seen by its No. 2 ranking on the Institute for Safe Medical Practices “Most Frequent Suspected Drugs in Reported Patient Deaths” list.
The drug’s dangers gained national prominence when it was announced that its manufacturer, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, had settled with the United States government over allegations that they paid medical professionals to refrain from warning patients of Exjade side effects.
What Are Gastrointestinal Complications?
Of the previously undisclosed side-effects of Exjade that were recently discovered, gastrointestinal complications constitute some of the most common and serious.
These complications can result in severe, sometimes fatal, stomach/intestinal problems that are characterized by the following:
- severe stomach/abdominal pain
- black/tarry/bloody stools
- vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- Loss of appetite
These symptoms can culminate into one of three serious conditions:
- Gastrointestinal Ulceration
- Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage
- Gastrointestinal Perforation
How Serious Are Exjade Gastrointestinal Complications?
The three aforementioned complications can each lead to serious health consequences that require immediate medical attention.
Gastrointestinal ulceration refers to the development of painful sores or ulcers within the stomach or the surrounding intestines. If left untreated, gastrointestinal ulceration can lead to perforation and bleeding, it is considered especially dangerous in elderly Exjade users.
Gastrointestinal perforation is the occurrence of hole developing in stomach or intestine area. This condition is life-threatening if not immediately treated by a doctor, with the odds of long-term damage increasing as time passes.
The last of these dangerous conditions is gastrointestinal hemorrhaging. This condition constitutes bleeding that occurs in the intestine area. Even minor bleeding in the intestine area can lead to severe health consequences if left untreated.
If you suspect you are suffering from any of these conditions it is important to immediately contact a medical professional to receive the necessary medical care.
In the event that you are suffering from one of Exjades other documented side-effects, medical professionals should still be contacted immediately.
What is the FDA Recall Status of Exjade?
In February 2010 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration levied a requirement on Novartis Pharmaceutical that Exjade must now come with a “black-box warning” regarding potential side-effects.
As recently as July 2015, the FDA has issued additional safety information regarding Exjade. This has included additional acknowledgements of gastrointestinal complication dangers in the drug’s users.
However, while the FDA has issued several safety and redefining materials regarding Exjade, they have yet to issue a recall of the drug. So, while medical professionals are now more aware of the dangers they may be subjecting their patients to, the drug is still being prescribed to new patients.
