Developed by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1995, Prevacid (Lansoprazole) routinely ranks as one of the most popular over-the-counter drugs in the United States.

Although effective and popular among consumers, the drug and the entirety of it’s proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drug class has been found to cause moderate to severe kidney complications in consumers. Previously undisclosed to consumers, dozens of recently published medical studies have discovered that PPI drugs are often at fault for kidney damage and a bevy of other dangerous side effects.

Some of the newly discovered side effects – including kidney complications and dementia – may be life threatening. However, most of the newly discovered side effects rarely develop into fatal conditions and may include:

Headache Nausea
Diarrhea Abdominal Pain
Fatigue Dizziness
Dry Mouth Constipation
Flatulence Decreased Appetite

What Effect Does Prevacid Have On A Users Kidney?

PPIs were introduced to the market as an alternative option to treat acid reflux disease – most commonly replacing the use of H2 blockers. These drugs quickly became and remain immensely popular due to their ability to rapidly quell the symptoms of acid reflux.

The popularity of these drugs caused many research teams to begin investigating what undisclosed side effects may eventually effect PPI users.

Most of these studies are only recently being published in medical journals, but their results have already brought concerns to both consumers and medical professionals.

One of these studies was conducted by a team based at Washington University in St. Louis and was published in February 2015.

The study, which covered the most popular PPI drugs, reported that PPI users faced a 28% risk increase for kidney damage with an additional risk increase of 98% for kidney failure.

This risk increase was compared to those who consumed H2 blockers to treat acid reflux instead of a PPI drug over a period of five years.

Another study conducted by a team of Johns Hopkins University researchers yielded strikingly similar results and has since been published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

With additional studies and FDA communications being released, medical professionals are now aware of PPI risks with many of them avoiding recommending the drug in certain unnecessary situations.

Although the evidence continues to mount, it is important to note that a causative relationship between Prevacid and kidney complications cannot yet be established. Rather, the medical community is only able to acknowledge and offer evidence of a correlative relationship between the two.

The kidney complications that carry a correlative relationship with extended PPI use now includes:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Gradual loss of kidney function
  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): Kidney complications occurring within hours or days
  • Interstitial Nephritis: Inflammation off kidneys

Additional information regarding published studies and kidney complications as they relate to PPI use can be found here.

How Dangerous Are Prevacid Kidney Complications To Consumers?

With the kidney vital to the health of the human body, any complication that may limit the organ’s effectiveness has the ability to develop into a life threatening condition.

Of the three previously mentioned complications, an AKI may be the most immediately dangerous to an individual.

Unlike CKD or interstitial nephritis, an AKI can takes as little as a few hours to fully develop into a life threatening condition. With such a rapid rate of development, an individual has little time to seek the proper medical attention required counteract the complication.

Almost a polar opposite to an AKI, chronic kidney disease takes an extended period of time to fully develop and will often go undetected for a majority of its developmental period. This ability to develop undetected comes from CKD’s often not showing any visible symptoms until it has progressed into an advanced stage of development.

However, the symptoms that may indicate a developing CKD may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Lack of Concentration
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Nighttime Muscle Cramping
  • Swelling of the Feet and Ankles
  • Puffiness of the Eyes
  • Development of Dry or Itchy Skin
  • Urinating More Often

Symptoms frequently fail to develop in cases of CKD as the kidneys are extremely adaptive and will compensate for any developing damage until it is so severe that it becomes irreparable.

If this extended development is allowed to occur, CKD may develop into end-stage renal disease (ESRD) – the deadliest kidney condition.

ESRD is characterized by a complete halt in all kidney function, leading to the body filling with water and waste – a uremia.

As function halts, swelling may begin to develop in extremities with debilitating fatigue and weakness taking effect soon after.

If left untreated, a victim may suffer from seizures or fall into a coma. ESRD of this severity is often life threatening and must be combated with immediate medical treatment.

The potential life threatening implications of kidney complications is why even conservative estimates of PPI risk increases has caused major concern in the medical community.

Has The FDA Issued A Drug Recall For Prevacid?

As of August 2016, neither Takeda Pharmaceuticals nor the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall or an intent to recall Prevacid.

While a recall does not appear to be imminent, medical professionals have begun taking measures to reduce the amount of patients using Prevacid and other PPI drugs.

Additionally, after being sued by Public Citizen, INC. in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia alleging that a lack of action has constituted a violation of procedure, the FDA has made greater attempts to inform the public of the possibility of kidney damage in consumers.
