Recently, there have been increasing concerns about knee replacement devices manufactured by DePuy Synthes. Some of these devices have caused serious harm and injury to people who have had knee replacement surgery. If you have received knee replacement surgery and are experiencing complications, you may have a case against the device manufacturer.
What are DePuy Knee Replacement Devices?
DePuy knee replacement devices are designed for patients who require knee replacement surgery. This procedure becomes necessary when the knee is no longer active due to pain or injury.
The DePuy devices are designed to work in harmony with the knee muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones. The goal of knee replacement surgery is too reduce pain, increase stability, and improve range of motion.
What are the Types of DePuy Knee Replacement Devices?
DePuy Synthes maufactures the ATTUNE Knee System. The device is advertised as being able to give patients increased stability and range of motion following knee replacement procedures.
The technology that makes up the ATTUNE System includes a “GRADIUS Curve,” designed to improve stability during everyday activities like walking or going down stairs. The “GLIDERIGHT Articulation” aims to provide smooth motion as your knee cap interacts with the rest of the knee. The “AOX Polyethylene” is a plastic material that is designed to replace cartilage in the knee, which can help improve the device’s strength and resistance to wear.
Recently, there have been numerous reports of the device failing not long after its original implantation.
DePuy recalled the ATTUNE Knee System in 2015. The reason for the recall was the potential for the Balseal, a small wire spring located on the post feature of the ATTUNE Knee Tibial Articulation Surface Instruments used in training, to become damaged and disassociate.
If the Balseal is separated from the post, it has the potential to enter the surgical site and be left in the patient if the surgeon is unaware of the disassociation.
What are Complications of DePuy Knee Replacement Devices?
Although knee surgery is often deemed as safe, there are still a number of complications that can occur when implanting this device.
The most common complications include:
- Surgical complications – Infection, heart attack, or stroke due to surgical trauma can be possible, yet small infections can be treated with antibiotics.
- Blood clots – One of the biggest post-surgical risks of knee replacement include blood clots; which can become life threatening if they come loose and travel to the lungs.
- Nerve Damage – In rare cases, nerve damage can occur to the knee and regions close to the leg.
Even if the surgery is successful, the patient can experience complications as soon as two years after the device was implanted. In the case of DePuy’s ATTUNE System, the reported early failures are often caused by tibial loosening at the implant-cement interface.
The FDA released other complications that can be caused by knee replacement devices, which include but aren’t limited to:
- Bone fracture
- Nerve damage
- Leg length discrepancies
- Poor range of motion
- Delayed wound healing
It is always crucial to review with you doctor on the risks and complications that can occur once deciding to implant a DePuy knee replacement device.
What are the Criteria for Filing a DePuy ATTUNE Knee System Lawsuit?
Despite the overall high success rate in knee replacement surgeries, researchers have identified larger-than-usual failure rates with the DePuy Synthes ATTUNE® Knee System.
Problems with ATTUNE include loosening of the tibial component at the implant-cement interface within the first two years after implant. Patients often present with pain on weight bearing, swelling, and decreased range of motion.
Researchers believe that these failures are likely underreported, as competing companies cannot provide data on the revision components that they replace.
We are currently investigating cases involving individuals who have undergone revision surgery due to loosening after a knee replacement using an ATTUNE device. The following criteria must be met to pursue a lawsuit:
- Implant of DePuy ATTUNE Knee after February 13, 2015
- Underwent revision surgery to replace the implant
