RALEIGH, N.C. — Dr. Charles Monteith, a Raleigh based doctor, is now offering an alternative surgical procure to replace hysterectomies as the primary way to remove defective Essure devices, according to WNCN-TV North Carolina.

The news comes on the heels of a report citing multiple patients who reported excruciating pain associated with a defective device, forcing them to undergo hysterectomies to remedy the pain.

The procedure offers an option for victims to remove the painful device while still keeping their tubes and uterus intact.

Dr. Monteith describes the alternative surgery as an 80-minute procedure done under general anesthesia.

“We make an incision and follow the device into the uterine cavity,” Dr. Monteith told WNCN. “Once we get to the very tip of the device, we then dissect out the device and all the surrounding tissue. In our experience it has been safe. We have done over 300. We have not had any major complications.”

While the device is reportedly safe in most women, there are still many users who experience device erosion and painful complications. This has led to an increase in device removal request in recent years.

However, Bayer, the device manufacturer continues to stand by its product, reportedly refusing to recognize any link between its product and any reported problems.
