Exjade GI Recall
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially approved Exjade on Nov. 9, 2009 for the treatment of people who suffer from chronic iron overload.
There has not been a Exjade recall, but the FDA has issued warnings to doctors and patients about the potential risk of Exjade side effects.
The agency announced in February 2010 that it will require a “black-box warning” on Exjade to alert patients of potential dangers.
In a message on its website, the agency said the label will warn that Exjade may cause:
- Renal impairment, including failure
- Hepatic impairment, including failure
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
In some reported cases, the agency said, the reactions were fatal.
The warning, which suggests doctors closely monitor patients taking Exjade, was released nearly five months after the FDA issued an early communication in September 2009 to alert healthcare professionals that they were reviewing the controversial drug.
The FDA also warned in 2007 that Exjade could cause kidney failure and had resulted in at least eight deaths. As a result, the drug’s label was edited to include risks of kidney failure, blood vessel inflammation, hives, and hypersensitivity.
Between November 2, 2005, and June 20, 2006, the FDA reportedly received 115 reports of suspected adverse drug reactions in association with the use of Exjade.
Of these 115 reports, 108 reported a serious outcome including death (19), hospitalization (74), life-threatening (6), disabled (4), and/or required intervention (1). For cases with an outcome of death, the cause of death reported in many cases was due to progression or complication of the underlying disease.
