SILVER SPRING, Md. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety communication detailing the risk of heart failure associated with the type 2 diabetes drug, Onglyza.

The communication notified consumers that warnings covering the increased risk of heart failure when taking Onglyza will be added to the drug label.

“Health care professionals should consider discontinuing the medicine in patients who develop heart failure and monitor their diabetes control,” the FDA announced in early April. “If a patient’s blood sugar level is not well-controlled with their current treatment, other diabetes medicines may be required.”

The safety communication was prompted when results of two DPP-4 inhibitor drug studies were unveiled in 2013.

The saxagliptin trial showed a 27 percent increase in the rate of first event hospitalization for heart failure, which carried an increased risk for mortality. Those with a previous history of heart failure or kidney impairments were most prone to suffering from Onglyza related heart failure.
