SILVER SPRING, Md. — The United States Food and Drug Administration has just issued another warning regarding some popular diabetes medications that fall into the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (or DPP-4 inhibitors for short), which work by decreasing blood sugar levels in patients with type II diabetes. The warning stresses the risk that these drugs may result in “severe and disabling” joint pain by their users. This warning comes after a previous FDA warning that mentions the pancreatic risks associated with this class of diabetes medications. Among several others, Januvia, Janumet and Janumet XR are forms of the DPP-4 inhibitors that the FDA mentions by name in its warning.

Side Effects of Janumet and Januvia

The FDA cited over 30 cases of joint pain in diabetes patients who took DPP-4 inhibitors over the course of seven years beginning in October of 2006. The majority of the cases came from patients who were taking Januvia. Although DPP-4 inhibitors have been approved by the FDA since 2006, there have been other serious side effects besides severe joint pain that have also been associated with the class of diabetes drugs. Most disturbing, Januvia and Janumet (both are taken orally, but Janumet also contains metformin) have been linked to pancreatic complications such as pancreatitis and even pancreatic cancer. Pancreatitis causes the pancreas to become inflamed and can result in the formation of cysts, serious infections and other tissue damage. Pancreatitis can eventually lead to pancreatic cancer, which can be very hard to detect before it becomes deadly. Both pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer have the possibility to be fatal. The FDA has even issued warnings on the link of this class of diabetes medications to pancreatic problems after receiving almost 200 reports of pancreatitis by patients who had been prescribed Januvia or Janumet.

Januvia/Janumet Lawsuits

Januvia and Janumet have been the subject of several lawsuits due to these serious side effects. Several patients who have taken the drugs have filed lawsuits against the drugs’ manufacturer, Merck & Co., alleging that the plaintiffs’ use of the drugs caused them to develop pancreatic cancer.
