RALEIGH, N.C. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has launched an investigation into the birth control implant, Essure, due to its possible health risks.

The investigation, reported by CBS North Carolina in early May, was initiated after the FDA received after thousands of complaints from women who experienced complications with the controversial device.

Tess Schulman, 38, told CBS Carolina she suffered abdominal pain, migraines and severe allergies after the implant was inserted.

“Just excruciating abdominal pain,” Schulman said.  “I went to the ER. I was in so much pain I could not sleep could not eat. I had no idea what was going on.”

Because the complications were not acknowledged by the device manufacturer, the reason for these symptoms went undetected for years.

However, even with complications like this becoming more prominent over time, the device manufacturer, Bayer, does not recognize any casual link between the complications and Essure.

“We have great sympathy for anyone who may have experienced problems following an Essure procedure, regardless of the cause of those problems,” Dr. Patricia Carney, U.S. Medical Affairs for Women’s Health Bayer, said in a video.

The risk of device erosion has reportedly led the FDA to order additional clinical testing for Essure. Additional clinical testing will lead to a requirement of box warnings on the device as well as more defined doctor roles prior to device implantation.

Even with the FDA investigation underway, the device manufacturer has not released a statement acknowledging the possible health complications.

Bayer issued the following statement about Essure:

“We are particularly concerned about statements that may be creating an atmosphere of unfounded fear, or that may be encouraging women who are not experiencing adverse symptoms from Essure to seek removal of Essure.”
