SILVER SPRING, Md. — Between 2005 and 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reportedly received 921 adverse event reports regarding IVC filter failures resulting in dangerous health complications, according to a report by the Personal Injury Bureau.
The reports included 328 instances of migration, 146 instances of embolization, 70 instances of organ or vein perforation, and 56 instances of fracture. Each of these reported complications carry extremely dangerous health risks that require serious medical attention.
Due to the serious risks associated with the device, the FDA has issued 2 safety communications regarding IVC filters. The first of these in 2010 stated that surgeons should remove the device once the risk for a pulmonary embolism has subsided. The second communication updated the original warning, stating that the devices must be removed between day 29 and 54 after implantation.
A prominent case regarding IVC filters occured between a South Dakota woman and Bard in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of South Dakota. The suit alleges that faulty manufacturing and lack of warning led to several severe injuries occurring after device implantation.
