Inferior vena cava filters, or IVC filters, are medical devices that are implanted in patients in order to reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism. The device works by catching blood clots in the inferior vena cava vein, and preventing them from causing additional complications. Usually, these filters are installed in patients who are unable to take traditional blood thinning medication.

The United States Food & Drug Administration has issued safety communications regarding the use of IVC filters. In 2010, their first communication recommended that doctors and patients exercise caution when using these devices, as they may create an increased risk for serious and life threatening complications. Some of the complications mentioned were device migration, device fracture and perforation of the inferior vena cava vein. The communication also warned that doctors remove the device as soon as the risk of pulmonary embolism was eliminated.

In 2014, the FDA revised their original statement, suggesting that IVC filters be removed between the 29th and 54th day after implantation. However, this warning came too late, as several lawsuits had already been filed. Many more lawsuits are expected to be filed in the coming months. Settlements are not yet being paid in IVC filter lawsuits. It is expected that this litigation will move forward and result in compensation for patients who were harmed by this device. Settlements typically include monetary damages for pain and suffering, disability, medical bills, and lost wages.
