ST. LOUIS — Johnson & Johnson has been ordered by a U.S. jury to pay $55 million to a South Dakota woman who claimed the company’s talcum powder products for feminine hygiene caused her to develop ovarian cancer.

It marked the second straight trial loss for Johnson & Johnson, the health-care giant who is facing about 1,200 lawsuits for similar claims for its lack of warnings about its talc-based products.

The jury returned the $55 million verdict Monday in favor of plaintiff Gloria Ristesund.

Ristesund was awarded $5 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages, according to multiple reports.

The verdict comes on the heels of a $72 million jury award in February to the family of an Alabama woman who died from ovarian cancer after years of using talc powder for feminine hygiene.

Johnson & Johnson intends to appeal the decision, company spokesperson Carol Goodrich told Reuters.

The jury’s decision should “end the litigation” and compel Johnson & Johnson to settle the remaining cases, said Jere Beasley, whose firm represents Ristesund.
