NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Johnson and Johnson has agreed to pay $5 million to settle a pelvic mesh lawsuit on behalf of a woman who require multiple surgeries after the mesh crumbled and decayed post-implantation, according to the New Brunswick Today.

The plaintiff alleged that the device failure led to sex being painful, among other complications.

Other vaginal-mesh lawsuits have been settled by J&J, but figures are unknown has they are kept confidential. The case is significant as there are currently 46,000 similar cases pending against J&J with federal judges “pressing the company to resolve them.”

“This settlement is a bad sign because it shows investors it’s going to cost a lot more to deal with this liability than people expected,” said Carl Tobias, a law Professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia.

The remaining cases J&J must face could pose serious financial issues as settlement figures steadily build-up.
