JACKSONVILLE — Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson recently suffered another costly court defeat over allegations that their talcum powder product causes cancer in female users, according to News 4 Jax.
Gloria Ristesun, a talcum powder user for over 35 years was awarded $55 million for damages that stem from her development of ovarian cancer in 2011.
In response to the verdict, Johnson & Johnson announced plans to appeal the decision:
“Multiple scientific and regulatory reviews have determined that talc is safe for use in cosmetic products and labeling on Johnson’s Baby Powder is appropriate.”
However, while Johnson & Johnson may stand by their product, the legal team representing Ristesund claimed that, “Internal documents from Johnson & Johnson show it knew of studies connecting talc use and ovarian cancer but, to this day, it continues to market it as safe – neglecting any warning.”
This settlement comes on the heels of a $72 million settlement that was paid to the family of Jackie Fox, who died of ovarian cancer after talcum powder use.
Because talcum powder is classified as a cosmetic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not execute a safety review of the product, leaving them and major cancer organizations unsure of talcum’s true health effects.
