ST. LOUIS — A California woman has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, claiming the drug manufacturer was aware of an alleged link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, but failed to take steps to warn consumers.

According to KSDK, an NBC-affiliated station in St. Louis, the lawsuit was reportedly filed on behalf of the unidentified woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012.

Johnson & Johnson addressed the woman’s claims in a St. Louis court in early October, KSDK reports.

A spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson issued a release last Tuesday, defending the safety of Johnson’s controversial baby powder.

“We recognize that women and families affected by ovarian cancer are searching for answers, and we deeply sympathize with everyone affected by this devastating disease,” the release states. “We are defending the safety of Johnson’s Baby Powder because science, research, clinical evidence and decades of studies by medical experts around the world continue to support the safety of cosmetic talc.”

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson, who have already lost two cases, including a $55 million and $72 million case.

In its natural form, some talc contains asbestos. Asbestos is product that causes cancer in the lungs when it is inhaled.

Along with baby powder, talc is also used in Shower to Shower body powder — products used by women for personal hygiene for decades. Studies have linked the use of talcum powder to ovarian cancer in women.

“A judge in New Jersey (United States) recently dismissed two cases that were set for trial in that state after finding that the plaintiffs’ experts who alleged Johnson’s Baby Powder caused ovarian cancer could not adequately support their theories, a decision that highlights the lack of scientific evidence behind plaintiffs’ allegations,” the release states. “The ruling was made after a two-week hearing specifically held to determine the sufficiency of the scientific evidence at the core of this litigation. The speculative theories put forward by plaintiffs in New Jersey are the same ones being used in all of the cases that have been filed around the United States.”

Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder is used to eliminate friction and leave skin feeling delicately soft and dry while providing soothing comfort. According to the official website, it’s recommended the product be used after every bath and diaper change. For adults, it’s recommended the talc-based powder be used “anytime you want skin to feel soft, fresh, and comfortable.”

Johnson & Johnson faces claims that it — in an effort to boost sales — reportedly failed for decades to warn consumers that its talc-based products could cause cancer. About 1,000 cases have been filed in Missouri state court, and another 200 in New Jersey. Trials in several other talcum powder lawsuits are set for later this year.
