NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Johnson & Johnson recently recalled nearly 14,000 bottles of Xarelto due to contamination. The company stated that they recalled 13,500 of the bottles after receiving a complaint about just one. J&J has also had issues with another one of its best-selling drugs, Risperdal, which was recently recalled due to mold found in some of its bottles. These recalls come right as many related lawsuits are being filed against Johnson & Johnson alleging that they manufactured and promoted Xarelto while down-playing its very serious risks.
What is Xarelto?
Xarelto (also known as rivaroxaban) is a blood thinner that is taken orally and is used to decrease the risk of strokes and blood clotting. Despite the drug’s FDA approval, it has still been linked with numerous health risks. Most worrisome, the drug can cause uncontrollable internal bleeding which may shut down organs. Unfortunately, there is no drug that can pause the bleeding, so anyone who receives this side effect has to wait for the drug to wear off before the bleeding stops. Although virtually every blood thinner has the risk of bleeding as a side effect, Xarelto stands out because of this lack of antidote for the potential bleeding.
Despite the lawsuits, Johnson & Johnson’s website’s description of Xarelto mostly lists side effects that will occur if patients stop taking Xarelto, such as increased risk of blood clots. J&J’s website also touts Xarelto’s effectiveness at preventing strokes and has this disclaimer near the bottom of its safety information, “XARELTO® can cause bleeding, which can be serious, and rarely may lead to death. This is because XARELTO® is a blood thinner medicine that reduces blood clotting. While you take XARELTO® you are likely to bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop.” Farther down the page, the site says, “XARELTO® can cause bleeding, which can be serious, and rarely may lead to death.”
Johnson & Johnson will be doing more in-depth studies on the blood-thinner in order to see if its use can be expanded to patients with heart conditions. There is no word yet if they will be doing additional studies on the dangers of bleeding it poses to users. In response to the lawsuits, a spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson stated that the manufacturers have always warned users about the risks of bleeding that Xarelto and all anticoagulants carry.
