CORK COUNTY, IRELAND — Pfizer has twice announced plans to close one of its plants in Ireland – first in May 2013 and then in September 2014. However, the Cork County plant has received another reprieve due to a rebound in Pfizer’s Lipitor sales. Sales of Lipitor, which is prescribed to treat high cholesterol, originally fell after Pfizer lost its patent for the drug. However, Lipitor’s sales have rebounded recently due to an increase in sales in emerging markets – particularly in China.
Cork County and other places in Ireland benefit from economic activity of drug manufacturers, who like to produce in Ireland because of the appealing tax incentives it offers. Although this may be good news for Irish workers, the increase in Lipitor sales may not be such good news for its users, especially with the rise in the number of Lipitor lawsuits in recent years.
What is Lipitor?
Lipitor (also known as atorvastatin calcium) works like other statins by reducing low-density lipoprotein or “bad cholesterol” levels. Lipitor does require a prescription for its use, but it has been widely prescribed and used for nearly two decades in the United States. Currently, there are 29 million patients with a Lipitor prescription, and the drug has sales of nearly $130 billion. Despite its prevalent use, research has recently linked the use of Lipitor to negative and serious side effects including type 2 diabetes and memory loss. The risk of developing diabetes after using Lipitor seems to be especially high in postmenopausal women. In the wake of this research, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has even issued new requirements that Pfizer and the makers or other statins include warnings on their drugs’ labels including the risks of taking the cholesterol medications.
Despite the FDA’s orders and despite the research that suggests otherwise, Pfizer maintains that Lipitor is a safe drug. However, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against the pharmaceutical giant regarding Lipitor. The lawsuits claim that Lipitor was the cause of the plaintiffs’ diabetes. Furthermore, the lawsuits allege that Pfizer was aware of these serious health risks but promoted Lipitor instead of warning the doctors and patients about the risks.
