BALTIMORE, Md. — Lupin Pharmaceuticals announced in May that a batch of its Mibelas 24 Fe birth control tablets would be recalled due to a packaging error that swapped the contraceptive tablets with the nonhormonal placebos, according to the Huffington Post.

Out of the 28 tablets that come in each pack, there are 24 with the active ingredients and 4 placebos. The placebos are to be taken during menstruation in order to keep users in the habit of taking the daily pills.

When the affected batch of pills was being packaged, each pack was accidentally rotated 180 degrees.

The pack should begin with the contraceptive tablets, but the rotation caused the first four pills in the pack to instead be the nonhormonal placebos.

Oral contraceptive tablets taken out of sequence can place the user at risk for unintended pregnancy, according to the statement issued by Lupin.

The Baltimore-based company also noted that many users would be unable to discern the mix-up between the two types of pills, increasing the risk of contraceptive failure.

The recall specifically affects Lot Number L600518 with a May 31, 2018 expiration date. Lupin has sent recall letters to its customers and distributors to arrange for the affected pills to be returned.

Although Lupin says there have been no reported cases of adverse health consequences, they advise those affected to return the birth control and alert their doctors about the recall.

Lupin Pharmaceuticals can be contacted about the recall via phone at 1-800-399-2561.
