MINNEAPOLIS — In August of this year, 78 lawsuits against Fluoroquinolone drug manufacturers were centralized in Minnesota federal court and will be heard by Chief U.S. Judge John Tunheim.

Multiple plaintiffs in these cases had been requesting that the cases be consolidated in order to decrease the costs of proceeding with trial for each of them individually.

The consolidation of these cases should also reduce the cost to the defendants and to the courts while also keeping different courts from returning conflicting rulings in extremely similar lawsuits.

Fluoroquinolone Side Effects

Fluoroquinolone medications have been popularly used for decades in order to treat various infections and illnesses, particularly urinary tract infections. Although this class of drugs has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, the FDA has since issued a requirement in 2013 that all Fluoroquinolone drugs have their labels updated to warn of the increased risk of serious side effects that have become associated with the drugs. Recent studies have demonstrated a link between using these products and developing severe nerve damage. Not only can this nerve damage be extremely painful, it can also impair muscle control and reduce sensation in the patient’s extremities.

Fluoroquinolone Lawsuits

Since Fluoroquinolone antibiotic products are produced in so many different forms, under so many different names and by so many different manufacturers, the lawsuits are not all completely the same. The majority of the lawsuits have been brought against Johnson & Johnson, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Schering Corp., Merck & Company, Inc., or McKesson Corporation after the patient took one or more forms of Fluoroquinolone including various gels, tablets and liquids such as Avelox (moxifloxacin), Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Factive (gemifloxacin), Floxin (ofloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin) and Noroxin (norfloxacin). Despite the varying products and manufacturers named in the lawsuits, the complaints are all similar in that they allege that the plaintiffs were injured as a result of taking the Fluoroquinolone products and that the defendants knew or should have known of the serious health risks associated with their drug, but they failed to warn patients about those risks.
