Zostavax is a vaccine that is used to prevent the shingles virus in patients who are 50 years and older. It is manufactured by Merck, a subsidiary of Bayer.
For years patients have been reporting adverse side effects linked to Zostavax, including the very condition it is meant to prevent — shingles. Lawsuits allege that Merck knew about the dangerous complications and failed to properly warn patients.
What are Zostavax Complications?
Zostavax is meant to prevent shingles, but many patients actually contracted the virus after receiving the vaccine.
Zostavax works by injecting a weakened form of the shingles virus into the body, which is supposed to trigger an immune system response. After the body fights off the weakened virus, it builds immunity and can then fight off a stronger version of herpes zoster.
However, lawsuits claim that for some patients, even the weakened form of shingles is too strong. People who are immunocompromised for any number of reasons cannot fight off the virus in the vaccine, and thereby develop shingles.
Plaintiffs argue that Merck knew that Zostavax could cause shingles, but didn’t list it as a side effect until eight years after it was introduced to the market.
How Dangerous are Zostavax Shingles Virus Complications?
While shingles itself is a painful, debilitating condition, it can also lead to even more serious complications.
Depending on where the virus develops and which parts of the body the infection attacks, shingles can cause permanent disability.
If the infections spreads around the eyes, it can cause vision loss. If it develops around the ears, it can cause hearing loss. Even more dangerous, the virus can cause inflammation in the brain, leading to brain damage and paralysis or stroke.
One of the most serious complications is myelitis, which occurs when shingles reaches the spine and causes inflammation, leading to permanent paralysis, numbness, pain and tingling sensations, or incontinence.
Shingles can also damage nerve fibers in the skin, which can cause chronic pain. If the damage occurs to the nerves that control facial muscles, it can cause facial paralysis, or Bell’s Palsy.
