TOLEDO, Ohio — A 62-year-old Toledo woman claims she suffered a stroke due to side effects caused by a controversial shingles vaccine.
Pamela Counselman says she suffered a stroke roughly four months after being prescribed Zostavax — a vaccine manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Merk, according to ABC-TV 13.
“My whole right side is affected, I have to use a walker all the time now and I have tremors on my right side that I can’t hold them still” Counselman told ABC-TV 13.
Counselman claims she wasn’t properly warned about the risks of Zostavax, a drug prescribed to treat the herpes zoster virus.
What Is Zostavax?
Zostavax is a vaccine manufactured by Merck that is used to treat the herpes zoster virus, or shingles. Almost 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime. The vaccine is meant only for patients 50 years and older, the age when the virus is more common.
Zostavax is administered as a single dose by injection. The vaccine uses a weakened form of the shingles virus, which works to activate the immune system. Once the body is able to fight off this version of the virus, it builds immunity and can then theoretically fight off full-fledged herpes zoster.
What Are The Risks To Taking Zostavax?
Children’s Medical Safety Research Institute (CMSRI) warns that Zostavax not only causes shingles but other serious side effects include:
- allergic reactions, which may be serious and may include difficulty in breathing or swallowing
- hives at the injection site
- joint pain
- muscle pain
- rash at the injection site
- swollen glands near the injection site (that may last a few days to a few weeks)
