BENTON, Ill. — Surgical patients have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois against Bair Hugger manufacturer, 3M, to collect compensation for damages suffered from infections caused by the device, according to the Madison Record.
The lawsuit claims the controversial device Bair Hugger device led to deadly infections, including the contraction of MRSA.
One of the plaintiffs alleges the device allowed contaminants to enter her surgical wound, causing MRSA to develop.
The infection reportedly caused the patient to have a two-stage revision of the knee surgery and additional hospitalizations, skin grafts, blood transfusions, and extended home healthcare.
The lawsuit claims that 3M is resonsible for negligence, negligent misrepresentation, and liability amongst other allegations.
In response to these claims, 3M has released the following statement: “3M wants patients, surgeons, and hospitals to know that there is absolutely no merit to these claims.”
“In over 25 years and more than 200 million patients warmed successfully by 3M’s patient warming products, there is not a single confirmed incident of infection caused by the Bair Hugger system.”
