WASHINGTON, D.C. — A petition urges a centralized docket for more than 100 lawsuits filed by women who claim they developed idiopathic intracranial hypertension (also known as IIH, or pseudotumor cerebri) because of the use of Mirena.

The petition, filed Dec. 29, requests to transfer all pending and future Mirena cases to a federal judge in Mississippi. The plaintiffs also claim that hundreds of additional IIH cases are forthcoming.

Plaintiffs’ counsel says there are 116 lawsuits pending in 17 jurisdictions that allege intracranial injury caused by Mirena with more to be filed in the coming months. Most pending cases were filed in New Jersey, but the petition asks for a coordinated docket in the Southern District of Mississippi.

Bayer has and is being sued by thousands who claim its intrauterine device is defective and causes injuries when it migrates in the uterus after implantation.

According to the petition, Bayer has for years ignored scientific evidence linking IIH to birth control devices such as Mirena, and fails to warn users about the association.

IIH is caused by fluid building up in the skull and not being able to be released or absorbed at a proper rate. Diagnosed by spinal tap, IIH can manifest as severe headaches, nausea and ringing in the ears, among other symptoms. It can also cause swelling of the optic nerves, leading to temporary or permanent blindness.

If you or someone you care about was harmed by the implant, you may be entitled to a settlement. We do not charge any legal fees unless you receive a settlement and we pay all of the case costs. If your claim is not successful for any reason, you do not owe us anything. We put it all in writing for you. Our lawyers will help you file your lawsuit.
