CONCORD, N.H. — With more than 750,000 women implanted with the device, Essure is one of the most popular forms of birth control on the market. But according to New Hampshire 1 News, the device is currently facing backlash over the health dangers it poses.
While the device is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and sold by pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG, there have been multiple occasions in which vocal members of the U.S. Congress have called for it to be pulled off the market.
Essure is a device that requires a simple implant in which a doctor inserts tiny nickel coils into the patients fallopian tubes. While the implant process is simple, many patients claim the issues began soon after implantation.
Danielle Quarantello, an Essure victim, described the view on Essure as, “Basically I was told it was a no-brainer and there were no side-effects.” However, Quarantello in addition to all other Essure victims soon discovered that side effects could include painful rashes, debilitating pain, allergic reactions and constant bleeding.
These side effects were not discovered until the device went to market as the FDA only tested 600 patients with no control group prior to approval.
Maria Larsen, an Essure victim, when asked to describe here health complications said: “I had multiple organs that were attached to one another that had to be cut apart.”
