EDINBURG, U.K. — British researchers have reportedly discovered that testosterone causes blood vessels to calcify, thus creating a heightened risk of heart disease and strokes.

Dr. Vicky MacRae, Group Leader at The Roslin Institute, said the calcification might help explain why men are more at risk for heart disease than women in similar age groups.

Because of this discrepancy, researchers have suspected for years that sex hormones may be related to heart disease, and know there is a verified link.

When blood vessels produce bone tissue and become hardened, the heart must work harder to pump blood around the obstacles, which puts increased stress on this vital muscle. Although they cautioned that much more study was needed, researchers predict that lower testosterone levels could prevent some heart problems.

In the United Kingdom, one person every three minutes is rushed to the emergency room suffering from a heart attack.

Testosterone and Strokes

These incidents are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, and two-thirds of the surviving victims have permanent disabilities.

Ischemic strokes, which are triggered by a blocked blood vessel, are by far the most common types of strokes. People with high cholesterol levels and hard arteries (atherosclerosis) are at a great risk for thrombotic strokes.

Very few things occur by accident in human anatomy, and it seems that lower testosterone levels in older men are no exception. These levels may naturally dip, in order to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes later in life. Dangerous hormone supplement or replacement therapy upsets this delicate balance.

Aside from heart attack and stroke, some other possible serious side effects of testosterone therapy include:

  • Sleep apnea,
  • Prostate cancer, and
  • Accidental exposure.

Damages in a dangerous drug case normally include compensation for economic and noneconomic losses. Large punitive damages are also a possibility, in many situations.
