PHILIDELPHIA, PA — Risperdal, an antipsychotic medicine, is in the news again. According to Forbes, a recent ruling could mean good news for plaintiffs outside of Pennsylvania. The drug produced by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has been facing a growing number of lawsuits for major side effects such as gynecomastia (male breast growth), which can be particularly challenging for adolescent boys who take the medication. Other serious side effects reported have included movement disorders which affect the motor functions of muscles in the body including the head, limbs, and even tongue.

Usually, punitive damages are awarded based on the laws of the defendant’s state of incorporation or headquarters (in this case, Pennsylvania). Curiously, the ruling states that all damages sought by the plaintiffs will take the laws of their home state into consideration and not just those of the defendant. As a majority of plaintiffs do not live in Pennsylvania, this could mean an increase in their settlement based on their state laws. Currently, there have been over 6,000 cases filed citing complications from the drug and we could see a significant settlement being given to the plaintiffs.

What is Risperdal?

Risperdal (risperidone) is an anti-psychotic drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1993.

It is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, irritability associated with autistic disorder.

Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, the controversial drug contains risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic that belongs to the chemical class of benzisoxazole derivatives. It works by changing the activity of dopamine and other naturally occurring chemicals in the brain.

What are the Serious Side Effects of Risperdal?

It has been linked to serious medical conditions. Some of these conditions are life-threatening.

One of the most serious side effects is gynecomastia (male breast growth). It has been alleged that the drug may increase levels of prolactin, a hormone, which stimulates breast development in women.

Since approving the drug for adolescent use, hundreds of cases of gynecomastia have been reported. In clinical trials of 1,885 children taking the drug, 43 boys reportedly experienced enlarged breasts. In some cases, breast development reached the size of “D” cups.

Another serious side effect are movement disorders. These disorders include uncontrolled movements involving the limbs, head or tongue. Sometimes involuntary grunting noises are made as well.

Other side effects include diabetes and heart problems.

These conditions can be disruptive, embarrassing and tiring. In many cases, the condition remains after medication is stopped.

What are Other Common Side Effects of Risperdal?

Stop taking risperidone and contact your doctor at once if you experience the following side effects:

  • Fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats.
  • Restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck.
  • Drooling, tremor (uncontrolled shaking).
  • Seizure, convulsions).
  • Fever, chills, body aches, flu-like symptoms.

More significant possible side effects include: low blood pressure, dizziness, heart palpitations, sleepiness, constipation, weight gain, sexual dysfunction and fatigue.

In a study of people taking the drug, the most common side effects in the treatment of bipolar were weight gain and slow movements, with tremor, stiffness and a shuffling walk (when used with lithium or valproate).

This is not a complete list of all possible side effects.
