SILVER SPRING, Md. — Recently, lawsuits have continued to mount against various diabetes drugs including Victoza and Janumet, due to serious side effects that have been linked to the drugs. Now, it appears that there are also troubling health risks which have been linked to Janssen Research and Development’s diabetes medication, Invokana. Invokana, also known as Invokamet, is a popular medication for treating type 2 diabetes, which works by inhibiting SGLT2, but it may be just as dangerous as other diabetes medications that have come before it.
Although Invokana was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration at the end of March in 2013, the FDA has issued a follow-up side effect warning in May of this year to inform patients and doctors about the health risks that have become associated with Invokana use. According to the warning, Invokana can result in kidney failure as well as diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis (or DKA for short) results from the accumulation of ketones in your blood, which can ultimately poison your body due to their acidity. Your body produces ketones when it has to burn fat for energy because your body’s cells are not receiving the glucose that they need. In severe cases of diabetic ketoacidosis, the patient can even go into a diabetic coma or can even pass away. DKA and other types of acidosis have previously been more common in patients with type 1 diabetes. In addition to DKA and acute kidney failure, the use of Invokana can also cause cardiac and circulatory system complications such as blood clots and heart attacks.
The FDA issued the Invokana warning after receiving reports of 20 patients experiencing DKA or similar issues within the first 15 months of Invokana first being approved by the FDA. These cases were so serious that they required trips to the emergency room and/or hospitalization. These 20 acidosis cases do not include other reports made to the FDA after June of 2014, and they also do not take into account reports of kidney complications or other health issues resulting from Invokana.
