Talcum powder is a household product that can be used everywhere from changing a baby’s diaper to applying make-up. Despite how common and unassuming talcum powder may seem, negative side effects of talcum powder use can be as serious and fatal as ovarian cancer. The commonplace white powder has been suspected of causing health issues for decades, but studies have only recently begun to conclusively link it to cancer. There were studies done in the 1980s that suggested a link between powder use and cancer, but the studies were not conclusive or well-known until more recent years. According to a study from Cancer Prevention Research that was released in June 2013, there was a 20-30% increase in risk for getting ovarian cancer for women who used talcum powder personally than for those who did not use it. Additional recent studies have continued to corroborate this study’s findings.
Lawsuits Filed Against Makers of Talcum Powder Products
Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi US, Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Chattem and Imerys Talc, have been named in multiple lawsuits regarding the known health risks of talcum powder. These companies, who manufacturer a great deal of the powder consumed in the United States, as well as other manufacturers, are pushing back on multiple talcum powder lawsuits. The lawsuits assert that the manufacturers have targeted women via advertisements in order to get them to purchase talcum powder and that they touted talcum powder as a safe product even though they were aware of the potential health risks. One recent lawsuit was filed in New Jersey by the estate of a talcum powder user who died from ovarian cancer. In their complaint, the plaintiffs cite a 1968 study that stated that the fibers in talc were similar to those found in asbestos. The complaint also points out that the Canadian government has acknowledged that talcum powder can cause cancer and that manufacturers of condoms have even stopped using talc since the mid 1990s. So far, the manufacturers have not been open to the idea of settling this case or any of the other ones like it. Chattem, one of the manufacturers, responded that the possible health effects have been clear for some time.
