UNITED KINGDOM — The FDA has recently issued a warning that the type type 2 diabetes drug, Invokana, can be associated with an increased risk of leg and foot amputation, according to a report by Diabetes.co.uk.
The warning was issued after results of the Canagliflozin Cardiovascular Assessment Study (CANVAS) trial were officially released.
The results indicated that amputations occurred nearly twice as often in those who were prescribed and actively used Invokana.
The study has been ongoing for 4 1/2 years with those taking the drug during the study having an amputation risk of 7 per 1000 patients with non-users having a rate closer to 3 per 1000 patients.
While the study shows an increase in amputation risk, the FDA has not yet stated a causation effect between the drug and amputations. Rather, the FDA has determined that correlation has been discovered with more research needed to determine if the relation is causation.
Signs of medical complications that require immediate communication with a medical professional includes pain, tenderness, sores, or ulcers in the feet or legs. The appearance of these heath risks should warrant an immediate reaction.
