Type 2 diabetes drugs categorized as DPP-4 inhibitors have been reported to carry an increase risk of cancer metastasis according to a study tested on mice.

According to Diabetes.co.uk, the study involved Januvia (sitagliptin) and Onglyza (saxagliptin) being exposed to the test mice.

The tests showed an increase in cancer metastasis, but did not show an increase in the development of cancerous tumors. Metastasis is the spread of cancer from one location in the body to another.

The results reportedly showed that those who may previously suffer from cancer — or are risk of developing cancer — prior to being prescribed a DPP-4 inhibitor, put themselves at a severe health risk. However, those who do not have those previous symptoms will not see any noticeable increased cancer risk.

Researchers involved with the study went on to say that “it remains to be determined whether these findings will hold up in human patients, but it may be best to exercise caution when giving antioxidant drugs to patients at increased risk for cancer.”
