AUSTIN — According to a new study from the Health Science Center at the University of North Texas, increased levels of testosterone in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients are linked to more delusions, agitation and aggression.
Although having higher levels of testosterone may initially lower your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, once you have AD, testosterone may worsen the disease’s symptoms.
The study followed 87 men who had AD and found that men who had higher testosterone levels were over 5 times more likely to experience hallucinations.
This aggression and aggravation of symptoms can make it exceptionally hard for a family member or caregiver to take care of an Alzheimer’s patient without the added expense of additional help or transferring the patient to a nursing care facility.
This study is particularly bad news considering the drastic increase in the number of men who have been diagnosed with hypogonadism, which is colloquially called low testosterone (or low T), and been prescribed testosterone replacement therapy.
Testosterone Therapy & Potential Side Effects
Although testosterone gels are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, there are many studies that show a link between the use of testosterone supplements and an increased risk of stroke and cardiac problems, such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or heart attacks.
Using testosterone supplements can greatly increase your risk of having a cardiac episode, especially if you are older than 65 or have a history of cardiac problems.
The risks have become particularly high in recent years due to over-diagnosing hypogonadism and also due to prescription of testosterone for off-label uses. The health risks of testosterone therapy have caught the public’s attention especially in recent years due to the increase in lawsuits filed against drug manufacturers for promoting testosterone while down-playing its health risks.
The large number of lawsuits against testosterone manufacturers and promoters is not the only good news for the lawsuits’ plaintiffs.
Europe has also begun to acknowledge and address the health risks of testosterone supplements by requiring warnings citing the cardiac risks on the drug’s labels. Europe is also requiring that the prescription of the drug be limited to men actually diagnosed with hypogonadism.
Although this does not directly affect U.S. labels or prescriptions, it serves as an important acknowledgment of the health risks of the drug and may affect U.S. labels in the coming years.
