CHICAGO — A new study has demonstrated a link between Xarelto use and more bleeding complications including eye hemorrhaging and stomach bleeding. This troubling study follows other Xarelto studies that have linked the blood thinner with other gastrointestinal bleeding and even death from bleeding out. The latest study, which was published on the Journal of American Medical Association’s website, raises additional concerns for anyone who is using Xarelto, and it also raises the question of whether even more lawsuits will be added to the ever-mounting cases against Xarelto’s makers, Bayer Pharma AG, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
Despite these known and highly publicized risks, Xarelto is still prescribed frequently because it is easy to use since it requires fewer checkups than other blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin). Unlike other blood thinners, however, there is no FDA-approved antidote for Xarelto’s potentially fatal effects. There is a proposed antidote, Andexanet alfa, made by Portola Pharmaceuticals, that is currently undergoing testing in order to get FDA approval, but, until it has gained approval, Xarelto patients who begin to bleed out can only wait for the drug to wear off, which can take hours and can even be deadly in some instances.
The number of Xarelto lawsuits has continued to increase dramatically over the last couple of months, and, as of the middle of June of this year, there were 552 cases pending, which is more than a 25% increase from the previous month. The lawsuits have been consolidated in multidistrict litigation in the Eastern District of Louisiana after they were found to be substantially similar. The lawsuits all contain similar claims against the makers of rivaroxaban, which is more commonly sold under the name Xarelto. The cases’ plaintiffs suffered various injuries, which they allege are the direct result of using Xarelto, most notably uncontrollable bleeding, which has even resulted in death. In addition to alleging that Xarelto was the cause of these injuries, the plaintiffs also allege that the drug’s manufacturers knew about the anticoagulant’s serious health risks – or should have known – but that they still fraudulently and negligently promoted the product without adequately warning the patients.
