NEW ORLEANS — There are currently over 400 lawsuits pending in federal court regarding the blood thinner Xarelto, and the number continues to grow by about five or ten new cases per week.
The lawsuits have been filed against the anticoagulant’s manufacturers and distributors, Bayer Pharma AG, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and allege that the companies fraudulently and negligently marketed the drug by talking up the benefits while downplaying the serious — and potentially fatal — side effects.
Since the end of 2014, these federal cases have been consolidated in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
The consolidation, known as multi-district litigation (MDL), should make the process faster and more efficient for both the numerous plaintiffs, as well as for the defendants, since the cases are all similar and allege similar injuries, which include uncontrollable bleeding, the need for blood transfusions, and even death in some unfortunate instances.
After its approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration, Xarelto (rivaroxaban) quickly became a popular alternative to other anti-coagulants like Coumadin (warfarin) because its use requires fewer doctors visits and tests.
Nevertheless, unlike Coumadin (the effects of which can quickly be counteracted with Vitamin K), Xarelto does not yet have an FDA-approved antidote. Because of this lack of antidote, patients, unfortunately, have to wait for the effects of the drug to wear off, which can take up to 24 hours, and which can potentially be fatal.
Fortunately, there may be an antidote in sight thanks to Portola Pharmaceuticals and its new drug, Andexanet alfa, which is in the promising late stages of the company’s internal testing and which is showing promise in rapidly and significantly reversing the bleeding out side effects of Xarelto.
The studies have even shown that it takes effect within mere minutes of being injected into the patient, and Portola Pharmaceuticals hopes to submit their drug by the end of 2015 for FDA approval.
Although the invention of an antidote is great news, it will not undo the damage done to patients who have been prescribed Xarelto and who may have suffered from its grave bleeding out side effects. Additionally, the use of Xarelto has also been linked to other serious side effects, including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or strokes.
