NEW ORLEANS — According to a study published in July of this year, taking Xarelto while pregnant has the potential to affect your unborn baby.
The study concludes that Xarelto (also known as rivaroxaban) is able to cross the human placenta — both from the mother to the fetus as well as from the fetus to the mother.
The study acknowledges that the fetus would receive a lower dosage than the mother but ultimately calls for additional clinical trials to be performed in order to determine the scope of the risk of Xarelto to babies in utero as well as their mothers.
Pregnant women and their unborn babies are not the only ones susceptible to the health risks of Xarelto, however. This latest study noting that fetuses may be exposed to Xarelto in the womb if their mothers take it comes after several negative studies have been published on the side effects of the popular blood thinner.
Xarelto has also been linked to bleeding out, eye hemorrhaging, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Although the FDA initially approved Xarelto for use as a blood thinner, the FDA has since warned that there is a risk of bleeding for Xarelto patients and that the drug lacks an FDA-approved antidote.
Fortunately, there is a proposed antidote, Andexanet alfa, which is being developed by Portola Pharmaceuticals. Andexanet alfa is currently undergoing testing in order to get approval from the FDA, but, until it has gained approval, Xarelto patients who begin to bleed out can only wait for the drug to wear off, which can take up to 24 hours and which has even proved to be fatal.
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Xarelto’s manufacturers, Bayer Pharma AG, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, alleging that the drug’s makers knew or should have known about the serious and potentially fatal health risks associated with the drug — and that they failed to warn patients.
Although the lawsuits were consolidated in multidistrict litigation last December in the Eastern District of Louisiana, new lawsuits continue to be added every month.
