NEW ORLEANS — A New Orleans man alleges Xarelto caused his wife to bleed uncontrollably and led to injuries that caused her death.
Clarence E. Perkins filed a complaint in early April in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana reportedly alleging that Xarelto’s drug manufacturer, Bayer, negligently and fraudulently represented the controversial drug to the medical and health care community.
A fast-selling anticoagulant blockbuster, Xarelto is used to decrease the risk of pulmonary embolism due to atrial fibrillation, and was prescribed to Opal Perkins, who began experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding on Feb. 11.
According to court documents, Perkins showed symptoms of severe gastrointestinal bleeding. After being rushed to the hospital, doctors said she was seriously anemic and needed an immediate blood transfusion. She did not survive the procedure.
Charles Perkins is reportedly demanding unspecified damages, claiming Bayer knew about the possible serious side effects, yet still aggressively marketed Xarelto while failing to warn physicians and patients that there was no effective antidote.
In a statement released in response to the lawsuit, Bayer insisted that “the benefit-risk profile of Xarelto remains favorable and consistent with clinical trials.”
Xarelto Side Effects, Complications
Rivaroxaban is an extremely powerful anticoagulant that is routinely prescribed in cases that involve a risk of a blood clot or embolism. Xarelto is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and related conditions.
Xarelto immediately found favor with practitioners because it was easier to administer and monitor than warfarin, a predecessor drug. However, unlike warfarin, there is no Xarelto antidote that can reverse the drug’s effects when sudden adverse symptoms arise.
Portala Pharmaceuticals is developing an antidote, but the company recently lost about a third of its value, putting andexanet alfa’s commercial future in jeopardy.
Damages in a dangerous drug action include compensation for economic and noneconomic losses, on top of substantial punitive damages.
