RICHMOND, VA — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now actively warning users of bone-density drugs that when used for an extended period of time, can lead to major bone fractures.
NBC 12 – Richmond reported that FDA studies have agreed with independent studies indicating that Fosamax-like drugs begin losing effectiveness as they are used for periods lasting longer than 3-5 years.
While the possible side effects are rare, they have the potential to wreak havoc on victims. Mallory Loehr, a five year drug user, reported that the fear of crumbling jaw and unusual fractures were very concerning to her.
The reported side effects have led medical professionals like Dr. Robert Downs of the VCU School of Medicine to pose the question, “If we can’t show any benefit, why should we take any risk?”
However, Downs still recommends that patients with very weak bones should continue to take the medication. More information regarding Fosamax health risks will continue to be dispersed to the public as the FDA launches more investigations and studies.
