SALEM, Ore. — Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum announced a consumer protection settlement that will require Janssen Pharmaceuticals to pay $181 million. The payment will settle allegations that the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary offered providers illegal kickbacks to increase the Risperdal prescription rate for unapproved purposes.
“This is our most important case settlement yet involving “Big Pharma,” Rosenblum said when speaking to Oregon Live, “Some of Oregon’s most vulnerable citizens will be the beneficiaries.”
The settlement money will be spread among 36 states while Janssen will fully disclose safety risks and proceed to appropriately market Risperdal.
This settlement comes as Johnson & Johnson reached a settlement for $2 billion and received a fine of $1.1 billion due to marketing and safety violations regarding their handling of Risperdal.
The Oregon Department of Justice reached an additional settlement with Omnicare for $300,000 in response to allegations that it was one of the illegal kickback recipients.
