There have been numerous lawsuits brought against Risperdal manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, by users of the drug. Most notably, Johnson and Johnson was quick to settle a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit after the plaintiff brought claims that Johnson & Johnson overemphasized the benefits of the use of the drug and failed to adequately warn consumers about the negative side effects of the drug. The complaint further alleged that the drug manufacturer targeted children despite knowing the potential side effects and that they did this even before the drug was FDA-approved.
What is Risperdal?
Risperdal (risperidone) is meant for use as an anti-psychotic medication and works by assisting serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain to control happiness. The drug has been used to treat patients who have schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or ADHD. Although Risperdal was approved by the FDA in 1993 for use as an anti-psychotic medication, there are many health risks that have been linked to its use, including diabetes, heart issues and even involuntary movements or grunts. These side effects can continue even after Risperdal use is discontinued. One of the major side effects is Gynecomastia, or male breast growth. Gynecomastia especially affects adolescents who were prescribed the drug, and some even developed breasts that were as large as a D cup and had to have them surgically removed.
Unfortunately, a recent study has also concluded that Risperdal may result in kidney problems or even failure in elderly users. According to the study, taking Risperdal increases an elderly person’s risk of experiencing acute kidney injury. This news is especially worrisome because of the high rate at which Risperdal has been prescribed to elderly patients, particularly those in nursing homes and those with dementia. Because of the high rate of elderly patients being admitted to hospitals for kidney problems after Risperdal use, and due to the increase in other negative side effects reported as a result of the use of the drug, there has been a push to be more selective about the prescription of antipsychotic medications, both for elderly and younger patients.
